âIgnoring my calls is childish, Brantley.â
Some douchebag in a purple suit was berating Brant as I came out of the public restrooms at the marina, ready to get to work. The joke about having obtained syphilis from squatting over the disgusting toilets died on my lips. The toe of my shoe tripped over nothing when I realized who the douche-canoe was. Jason Oliver, Mr. Silver Fox weather reporter in the flesh. And based on how tightly Brant clenched his jaw, I didnât think he was happy to see him. I was no expert in body language, but with his beefy arms crossed over his chest and his feet braced apart like that, it looked like Brant expected battle instead of a hug from dear old dad.
A wicked little smile spread across my face and my squirrelsâwhoâd been happily asleep after raising hell on the motorcycle earlierâlifted their heads. I was high on adrenaline, caffeine, and a surprising amount of affection for a certain nerd boy. Time for Brant to understand what it was like to have someone defend him.
âReady to get to work?â I asked loudly, coming up behind Mr. Oliver and skirting around him when the cologne cloud threatened my morning bagel. Did the guy bathe in that shit?
Brant unfolded his arms and put his hand on my back as I sidled up next to him, looking more distracted than I cared for.
âWell, hello, gorgeous,â Mr. Oliver crooned, looking greasier than a donut straight out of the frier. âWhoâs this, Brant?â
Brantâs hand tightened on the back of my polo shirt. âThis is Vee. Sheâs helping me with my latest experiment for the professor. Vee, this is my father.â
I steeled myself for slime and held my hand out while pasting on an energetic smile. âOh, you must be so proud of your son! Heâs got a brain that just gives me shivers.â A cock that did the same, but I didnât think this was the time for it.
The man slid his palm into mine and I wasnât sure if I was holding a smooth little babyâs butt or a manâs hand. Did the guy not have even a hint of a callus? From this close, his hair looked ridiculous standing taller than the height of his forehead. Did he use Aquanet to achieve that look? Even his smile turned my stomach. Unnaturally white teeth grinned at me, but not one ounce of that smile reached his eyes. He was either pure evil or strayed a little too deep into the Botox craze.
âItâs my pleasure,â he murmured, bending his head like he intended to kiss the back of my hand.
I snatched my appendage back and resisted the urge to wipe it on my khakis. I looked up at Brant. âAll set? We have so much to complete today!â And that certainly wasnât a lie. I was sure Molina would be calling me tonight, asking for a report on whether Brant would be halting his plan to capture one of our octo-pussies.
Brant nodded curtly and moved us away from his father.
